Cisco DC2 Energy Efficient Data Center

February 2011 – September 2012

Consulting engineering support to Cisco IT on this new data center construction. This is Cisco’s most energy efficient data center and represents a number of new design attribute. This site is built on a completely shared infrastructure using Cisco’s Unified Computing System; allowing for high utilization across a shared compute and networking platform. The DC2 site in Allen, TX has an industry leading PUE (1.32), uses rotary UPS and an outside air cooling methodology, removing the need for chillers on site. Only CRAH’s are installed at this site and we achieved a LEED Gold for the building portion of the site.

Portugal Telecom Energy Efficient Data Center

January 2009 – January 2011

Cisco design lead for this new data center construction. At the time of construction it is estimated to be in the top 5 of most energy efficient data centers in the EU and in the top 10 worldwide. We implemented an outside air “free cooling” architecture, high density and high efficiency across network, compute and storage domains. This site was designed from the IT load out to the building shell; an inversion of the typical process and allowed the PT design leads to work with us in a SketchUp 3D wiki approach.

US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Data Center Efficiency Assessment

May 2010 – November 2010

Lead architect for an energy efficiency assessment of the EPA’s National Computer Center (NCC).  Provided electrical, mechanical and spatial capacity and efficiency benchmarks using contemporary metrics like Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE), Data Center Infrastructure Efficiency (DCIE) and Corporate Average Data Center Efficiency (CADE).  Provided geo-spatial 3D modeling services using Cisco CIM methodology and Google SketchUp freeware.  Project included sustainability strategy, planning, design, business case and good-better-best improvement options represented in 3D CIM models as before and after models.  Provided training and support for 3D CIM user rendering and CIM library implementation.
